Los Naguales

Carlos Castaneda tells in his books that for Mexican Chamans, inheritors of the Toltec tradition, the world that surround us, ourselves and what we call reality has 2 aspects:

TONAL: it’s all the world which warps with the reason, the right side, the daily reality and it’s connected with the daily life. Involves also the physical body of the person.

NAGUAL: it’s that part of ourselves that we never know: it’s the area of the world and ourselves, where the power lies down. It’s the left side. Our energetic body. It’s the place from where the creativity comes from and also death. Has relation with the world of dreams.

Everything contains these two aspects, the known and unknown, the familiar and mysterious, and we move between the both worlds. We access to the first one everyday, but to access to the second one, we need to reach Non-Ordinary States of Consciousness.

Into the seek of these states of consciousness and new perceptions the ancient Toltec developed a path toward the total consciousness and in the same way as Buddhism or Hinduism but with its own characteristics. This is the way of the warrior-traveler in order to get the silent knowledge (the one which is not communicated by words and only can be experienced) and then burn into the inner fire and finally submerge into the dark sea of consciousness.

The Toltec’s way has been called in many ways: nagualism, the mastery of trying, the search of complete freedom, toltequity, witchcraft or sorcery among others.

The word Nagual also is used to designate the leader of a group of wizards.

I liked the choice of the name Los Naguales for this blog. By the way, we are not chamans but we are curious and absorbed people by the indescriptible principle present in the things, the unknown and mysterious, the Nagual. A weblog is a good place to express our feelings and opinions, experiences, reflections and ruminations, in short, the long and winding road we are going through.

“We’re not talking about the same thing, “he said. “For you the world is weird because if you’re not bored with it you’re at odds with it. For me the world is weird because it is stupendous, awesome, mysterious, unfathomable; my interest has been to convince you that you must assume responsibility for being here, in this marvelous world, in this marvelous desert, in this marvelous time. I wanted to convince you that you must learn to make every act count, since you are going to be here for only a short while, in fact, too short for witnessing all the marvels of it.”
-Don Juan Matus ( Journey to Ixtlan)
